Driving Safe in the Northern Rivers: Tips for a Smooth Journey
Exploring the Northern Rivers by car is one of the best ways to experience the beauty of Byron Bay, the hinterland, and everything in between. But with winding roads, ever-changing weather, and a mix of local and overseas drivers, it’s worth knowing a few safety basics before you hit the road.
Keep Left, Give Way Right
In Australia, we drive on the left side of the road — and yes, that includes roundabouts. Always give way to your right. It’s a simple rule, but with lots of international tourists on the roads, not everyone gets it right. Keep an eye out, stay alert, and don’t assume the other driver knows what they’re doing!
Watch for Potholes
The Northern Rivers is known for its natural beauty… and its potholes. These road craters can cause flat tyres or even buckle a wheel, especially if you’re going too fast. Be especially cautious when driving at night or in wet weather, when potholes are harder to spot.
If you do get unlucky, don’t stress — all our cars come with a wheel change kit and 24/7 roadside assistance. Help is never far away.
Wet Weather Wisdom
Rainstorms can roll in quickly around here, so here are a few things to remember:
Turn on your low beam headlights when visibility drops — it's not just about seeing, it’s about being seen.
Keep a safe braking distance — wet roads take longer to stop on.
If it’s really bucketing down, just pull over somewhere safe and wait it out. Rain usually passes quickly around here.
And if the windscreen wipers are struggling, just let Stephen (the owner) know — we’ll replace them, no problem.
Stay safe, drive smart, and enjoy the ride.
With a bit of care, your Northern Rivers road trip will be nothing but smooth sailing.
