What’s in the rental agreement?
If you’re hiring a car in Byron Bay or the Northern Rivers, you’ll want to make sure you understand what’s included in your rental — and what’s not. At Motor Renter, we’re all about keeping it simple, fair, and transparent. Here’s a breakdown of the important stuff in plain English, so you know exactly what to expect.
🚗 1. Paying for Your Rental
Short-term hires are paid in full upfront.
Long-term hires (1+ weeks) are paid weekly in advance.
If you paid a $50 reservation deposit, it comes off your first week’s rent.
There are no refunds once payment is made, but your bond is refundable if the car is returned in good condition.
🗓️ 2. Extending Your Booking
Need to keep the car longer? Just message or email us at least 72 hours before the end date.
We’ll confirm your extension in writing and update your rental — no need to sign a new agreement.
No confirmation = no extension = possible late return fees.
🛣️ 3. Where You Can Drive
You’re covered to drive in Northern NSW and South East Queensland, up to 300km from Byron Bay.
Going further? Let us know — we just need to make sure the car’s good for the trip.
No off-road driving — that includes sand, mud, or floodwaters.
👤 4. Who Can Drive
Only the person on the agreement can drive the car.
Want to add a friend or partner as a driver? Let us know — we’ll update your rate and paperwork.
🔧 5. Vehicle Condition, Fuel & Cleanliness
We’ll hand the car over clean and full of fuel — return it the same way.
Photos before and after your trip help us both if there’s ever a dispute.
If the car needs a clean on return, there’s a car wash at BP in Byron Industrial Estate — $5 for exterior and $2 for vacuuming.
🛠️ 6. Damage, Tyres & Insurance
Your liability is capped at $2750 (or $3750 if under 25). That’s your insurance excess.
If a tyre pops or goes flat, it’s your responsibility to replace it — but we’ve got wheel kits and roadside assistance to help.
Any damage, accidents, or theft? Let Stephen know ASAP so we can help or provide a replacement car if needed.
📞 7. Roadside Assistance
You're covered by NRMA Roadside Assistance. For breakdowns, flat batteries, or tyres (not your fault), call 1300 369 349 and quote Scooteria Byron.
If you’re at fault and the car needs towing, you’ll need to cover the cost of the tow.
📏 8. Kilometre Limits
Long term: 800 km/week
Short term: 150 km/day
Drive further? Extra distance is charged at $0.15–$0.50/km, depending on how far over the limit you go.
Odometer readings help us keep the car serviced and running well for you.
💸 9. Fines, Tolls, and Admin Fees
You’re responsible for tolls and traffic fines.
If we receive an unpaid fine or toll on your behalf, there’s a $20 admin fee.
Driving through Brisbane? Make sure to pay your Linkt tolls online.
🚫 10. What Not to Do
No smoking in the car — it’s a $150 cleaning fee if you do.
No lending or subleasing the car to mates or strangers.
Don’t drive it like a hire car from the movies — look after it and it’ll look after you.
🏠 11. Proof of Address and ID
To rent a car from Motor Renter, you’ll need:
A valid driver’s license (plus a passport for international visitors).
Proof of where you’re staying — this could be a rental agreement or hotel booking confirmation.
Let us know if you change your address during the rental — we need the correct overnight parking address for our records.
💬 Final Word from Stephen
At Motor Renter, I want you to feel confident, comfortable, and supported on the road. That’s why we make our rental agreement easy to understand and our support always available. Got questions? Just send me a message and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
