Why We Rebranded from Scooteria Byron to Motor Renter

If you’re new here—welcome! If you’ve been following us for a while, you might know that we originally started out as Scooteria Byron, a small rental business based in Ocean Shores, offering mostly motorbikes and scooters for hire around Byron Bay and the Northern Rivers.

So, why the change to Motor Renter?

We Outgrew the Name

When we first launched, our goal was to provide fun, affordable two-wheel rentals—especially scooters. But pretty quickly, we realised something important: the demand for rental cars in Byron Bay far outweighed the demand for scooters. We found that backpackers, families, and digital nomads were all looking for easy, short- and long-term car rentals to explore the beautiful coastal and hinterland areas around Byron, Mullumbimby, and beyond.

At the same time, we noticed that most of the scooter enquiries we received were from people wanting to hire 50cc scooters, which you can legally ride on a car licence in some states—but not in New South Wales. Here, you need a motorbike licence to rent any two-wheeled vehicle, which came as a surprise to many. As a result, motorbikes were much more popular than scooters, and that trend continues today.

Enter: Motor Renter

As we evolved, it became clear that the name “Scooteria Byron” was limiting and even a bit confusing. People thought we only offered scooters—which wasn’t true anymore.

That’s why we rebranded to Motor Renter: a name that captures everything we do, and everything we might do in the future. Today, we offer car rentals, motorbike rentals, and a growing fleet that meets the needs of both locals and travellers. But who knows—maybe someday we’ll be renting out vans, trucks, buses... even planes? The sky really is the limit.

What hasn’t changed is who we are. Motor Renter is still proudly owned and operated by Stephen, a family man from Ocean Shores with a passion for all things that move. You’ll still get the same easygoing, personal service, direct communication, and local knowledge that made Scooteria Byron so trusted. We’re just stepping into a bigger name that better fits what we do and where we’re heading.
